Dennis Lee is a great Canadian children's poet. He has a board book collection titled Alligator Tales and has 11 books in this collection with Nora Hilb as the illustrator.
Why I think his short poems work as board books? It's because they are silly and the images are colorful and simple. The rhymes we use in parent Child Mother Goose are from Dennis Lee. I have used his short poems as stretches in my toddle storytimes. His short poems have a lyical charm that small children enjoy hearing. While a book of poetry is not right for a baby, a short quick poem in a board book works well.
